If you had to chose one or the other to move you from the acoustic to the electric guitar world, which would you chose and why?

Re: Les Paul or Strat?
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 4:54 PMit depends what kind of stuff you play.
do you sing?
i would like to add a third option. try out a Gibson ES-335 style semi-hollow body. they have more of a sweet resonate tone then a Strat or LP. but you can also totally rock out on it. the body is solid up the center behind the pickups and the bridge and either side by the f-holes is hollow. i recently picked up an Agile AS-820 www.rondomusic.com/as280blkchhw.html and totally love it. -

Re: Les Paul or Strat?
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 5:06 PMthat's the guitar in my profile pic. the like is to a black one because i think the natural finish is out of stock. Epiphone makes a model called the "Dot" which costs about $400.
another thing you should check out is Fender "Thinline Telecasters" which have a resonant chamber and dual humbucking pickups. -

Re: Les Paul or Strat?
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 5:56 PMI do like the Thinline teles - pretty good sound.
I play mostly blues and alternative rock, and would prefer a guitar that sounded more jazz than metal. -

Re: Les Paul or Strat?
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 9:17 PMi would have never thought before of ordering a guitar but i heard so much good stuff about them on different guitar forums that i decided that at that low of a price to just get it and if i didn't love it i'd just send right it back.
i think the build quality, sound and feel of it where much better then any comparable Epiphone or Ibanez. and it has a spruce top instead of maple, which i like the sound of a lot better.
as to upgrading anything about it, no i haven't...the pickups are actually really decent. and the tuners are Grovers which are nice, the pots toggle and jack are pretty cheap but functional. i will eventually try out some upgrade pickups sometime in the future and when i do i will put high quality pots, jack and toggle in it. but i'm not in any hurry to do so, maybe next year.
when i first plugged it in i thought i didn't like the pickups, but then i took a screwdriver and dropped the neck pickup down about level with the mounting ring and found where it sang really nice, and then i raised the bridge pickup slightly. (for some reason the neck pickup on these is a little hot)
i play through a Fender Blues Deluxe tube amp and at jams people have been very impressed with my tone. definite jazzy cleans. nice bluesy tone with my OCD overdrive and when i kick on the CrunchBox distortion it rips real nice, though it does feed back sooner then my Strat but that can be fun too. -

Re: Les Paul or Strat?
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 5:32 PMThanks, Theotch - I'll check out the ES-335 next time I'm at the store.
You've given me something to think about with the Agiles - I checked out the website and the prices are amazingly inexpensive, which makes them somewhat scary at the same time. Do you see any need to upgrade any of the components on your AS-820? -

Re: Les Paul or Strat?
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 12:56 PMSemi-hollow body guitars are getting pretty popular these days, but for me, there is just nothing sweeter than a Strat. I played a Les Paul Custom through a Marshall halfstack for 10 years; then I went to a Dean ML for another 10 years, and I eventually came around to my '90 Strat Plus which I still play. I have about a dozen axes, but when I can take only one guitar, it is always my Strat Plus and I know I am covered no matter what genre.
A huge factor is what choice of amp you go with. You definitely want to test drive your semi-hollow (or any guitar for that matter) with the amp you are considering. Semis are a bit temperamental. Solid body guitars tend to be more forgiving.
